A filling rebuilds the part of a tooth that decay or a chip has taken away. It is everyday dentistry, done carefully.
Overview
A dental filling replaces tooth structure lost to decay, a small fracture, a chip or years of wear. After the damaged area is cleaned, a restorative material is shaped to the original contour so you can bite without a hole collecting food.
Fillings do not make a tooth “new”. They stop a small problem from becoming a larger one, when the remaining tooth is still strong enough to hold the restoration.
Why this may be needed
A filling can be necessary when there is tooth decay, a cavity you can see or feel, a small fracture, a chipped edge, or a worn biting surface that has become sensitive. The decision is made on the chair after the tooth is examined — sometimes with an X-ray.

What to expect
The tooth is kept comfortable, the damaged part is removed, the space is cleaned, and the filling is placed and polished. You will be asked to check the bite before you leave. A simple filling is often finished in one visit.
Aftercare
Avoid very hard food on that side until numbness wears off. Mild sensitivity can last a few days. Call the clinic if the bite feels high or pain increases instead of settling.
Questions people ask
Does every dark spot need a filling?
No. Some stains are only on the surface. Dr. Sonal will say whether the enamel is still intact.
How long does a filling last?
It depends on the size, the tooth and how you bite. Regular check-ups catch wear before the filling or the tooth fails.
Will it hurt?
The tooth is numbed when needed. You may feel pressure, not sharp pain. Tell us if anything feels wrong during the visit.
