Teeth Whitening

Whitening is cosmetic. It is offered after decay and gum inflammation are under control — not instead of that work.

Overview

Professional whitening uses a gel on natural enamel. Crowns, fillings and white spots will not all change the same way. Sensitivity is common and usually temporary. Results vary and they are not permanent; tea, coffee and smoking bring shade back.

Why this may be needed

People ask when teeth look more yellow than they remember. First we check that the colour is stain, not decay or an old filling that needs replacing.

What it can help with

  • A lighter shade on suitable natural teeth
  • A supervised gel rather than unknown shop kits

Signs to discuss

Even colour with healthy gums is a better starting point than pain, cracks or untreated cavities.

A dentist must examine the tooth or bite before any diagnosis.

What to expect

Examination, shade record, then in-clinic or take-home trays as advised. We stop if sensitivity is too much.

Aftercare

Avoid staining drinks for a short period as advised. Use a gentle paste if teeth feel sharp to cold.

Questions people ask

Will my fillings match afterwards?

Old fillings stay their colour. They may need replacing later if the difference bothers you.
